If you’re from India then you should know that currently the country is
having season of votes, and next year we will be having the mega “Lok Sabha”
election. On the eve of this, the popular social networking giant Facebook have collaborated with Association for
Democratic Reforms (ADR) to provide important details about the election
candidates on the mobiles of the potential voters of the country for free of
cost.
Voters will be able to know about the family background of candidates
who will be participating in the upcoming Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. It
is indeed a great initiative, and it is likely to attract the tech-savvy youths
of the country.
Voters will also be able to get the details about the criminal,
financial, educational, professional information of the aspiring election
candidates on their personal mobiles via an advanced USSD technology, developed
by Facebook itself.
Eventually, Facebook for USSD is already quite a popular technology
which basically helps the people to access Facebook on mobiles for free even
without Internet connectivity. In simpler words USSD provides useful text
experiences to the users, and it is far better than normal SMS and also much
cheaper than general mobile Internet plans.
How to Get Election Candidates details?
It’s very easy, and even a class 4 student can do it with super ease.
First you’ve to just dial *325# from your mobile and after that
you need to select the dedicated election menu. You might also dial *325*35#
directly to access the election menu for free of cost.
Official Statement
Facebook and ADR have published a joined statement to acknowledge this
matter officially. The statement added many details about this technology, and
also provides why it is necessary for the Indians.
Ankhi Das, the Director of
Public Policy at Facebook India, said, "Over 82 million Indian citizens access
Facebook regularly and an increasing number of users access the platform on
mobile. Together with ADR, we hope to make information more readily available
to users about the antecedents and performance of political candidates."
The main motive of this program is to help the common people to
get directly involved in prime issues of governance, Das added.
Trilochan Sastry, the Founder
and Trustee of Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), also expressed his own
thoughts about this project. He said, "Voters will be able to know the poll
worthiness of candidates - their educational, criminal and financial
information - at their fingertips and choose wisely. Simply voting in an
uninformed manner is not enough; citizens need to make an informed
choice."
